I originally started with a copy of the official WotC sheets and overlayed text / ink on top, but eventually ended up mostly re-creating the official sheets as closely and functionally as I could with tables and ... I've created a google sheets interactive character sheet with precalculating fields. This makes creating and upgrading your character much easier, and allows your DM to have a live view of your sheet if you're playing online as so many people do. I've based the layout and fields on the default character sheet for familiarity and ease of use. .
